A Night of Visual Storytelling
On World Refugee Day, we welcome you to build with us on a diverse and inclusive society at FabCity: the city of the future. Refugees and non-refugees will take stage and share their stories during this co-created storytelling night by musicians, visual artists and refugees.
Ik ben net als jij |أنا مثلك تماماً
The term refugee is often associated with poor or illegal people who are trying their luck in prosperous countries like ours, people who only come here to benefit from our welfare and not to contribute to our society. –I am just like you- opposes this manner of labelling people and challenges people to be curious and engage with one another other instead of blindly making assumptions. Only when you are curious you can see things from another’s perspective and begin to experience their humanity.
-I am just like you- (أنا مثلك تماماً) is not about a wish for uniformity, assimilation or adjustment. It stands for diversity in all forms. It’s about being open to similarities, and not only seeing the differences. It’s about the fact that we are all people, you and me. If you have this mindset, rooted in equality, everybody should have the same rights and be welcome.
Meet the people behind these stories
With –I am just like you- we take photo’s of people from different walks of life and ask about their stories. We dream of an archive full of inspiring people with beautiful stories who dare to endorse the idea of ‘we’. Our photo exposition started during the program series #VLUCHTROUTE in Pakhuis de Zwijger. From that point, we collaborated with divers events like the Eat to Meet dinners, Ondertussen in de Kweekschool, and Migrating World. While we talk with refugees and non-refugees at these divers events, we hope to create awareness about diversity. During the visual storytelling night on the 20th of June, you can meet the people behind their stories.
